Risk Assessment Policy for Bake N Play Cookery Club
At Bake N Play Cookery Club, we are committed to creating a safe and inspiring environment where children can explore the joys of cooking. Our risk assessment policy ensures that every aspect of our sessions is meticulously planned to mitigate potential risks, allowing children to focus on learning, creativity, and fun.
1. Food Allergies and Intolerances:
-
Risk: Some children may have allergies or intolerances to certain foods, which could lead to allergic reactions.
-
Control Measures:
-
We gather comprehensive information about any allergies or intolerances prior to each session from parents/guardians.
-
All ingredients are clearly labelled, and children are informed about potential allergens. Our club maintains a strict no-nuts policy.
-
We uphold rigorous hygiene practices to prevent cross-contamination and ensure the safety of all participants.
-
2. Burns:
-
Risk: Children could accidentally burn themselves while handling hot items such as boiling water, pans, or ovens.
-
Control Measures:
-
Our sessions are designed with safety in mind, and children do not directly use stoves. They learn food preparation techniques under close supervision.
-
We educate children on safe handling practices for hot items and provide age-appropriate equipment.
-
Always under adult supervision, we ensure that all cooking equipment is in optimal condition.
-
During food tasting, we ensure items are at a safe temperature for consumption and provide clear instructions to prevent burns.
-
3. Cuts and Injuries:
-
Risk: Sharp knives and kitchen utensils pose a risk of cuts and injuries to children.
-
Control Measures:
-
We provide child-friendly knives and utensils suitable for their age and skill level.
-
Children are taught proper knife chopping/cutting techniques and supervised closely during cutting and chopping activities.
-
The tutor always has to demonstrate and remind the children how to correctly use the knife.
-
In some cases due to potential risk we deserve the rights to refuse to a child to participate a hands on activities where knifes are involved.
-
4. Slips, Trips, and Falls:
-
Risk: Spills, clutter, or slippery floors could result in slips, trips, and falls.
-
Control Measures:
-
Before the start of each session, examine the room for any hazards. It's clear and concise, ensuring that the room is checked for potential hazards before the session begins.
-
We maintain clean and organized work areas, promptly cleaning up spills to minimize hazards.
-
Children are encouraged to walk, not run, in the cooking area to prevent accidents.
-
5. Food Hygiene and Contamination:
-
Risk: Poor food hygiene practices could lead to illnesses and compromise safety.
-
Control Measures:
-
We educate children on the importance of handwashing before handling food and provide handwashing facilities and sanitizers.
-
All surfaces and utensils are meticulously cleaned and sanitized before and after use to uphold the highest standards of food hygiene.
-
6. Emergency Procedures:
-
Risk: Emergencies such as burns, cuts, allergic reactions, or accidents may occur during sessions.
-
Control Measures:
-
Our staff are trained in first aid procedures, and a fully stocked first aid kit is readily available.
-
We maintain emergency contact information for each child and have clear procedures in place for responding to emergencies.
-
Regular reviews and updates of our risk assessment policy ensure that we continually identify and manage any new risks effectively. We actively involve parents/guardians in the process, prioritizing the safety and well-being of every child in our care. At Bake N Play Cookery Club, safety is our top priority, allowing children to explore the culinary world with confidence and joy.
